ABOUT EDGETONE RECORDS
Edgetone Records originally began
in 1991 to support self-produced modern jazz. After being in hiatus for
over seven years, chained to a go nowhere distribution contract, Edgetone
is back and more burley then ever. Unlike many music corporate structures
that mimic a parasite, Edgetone is dedicated to a symbiotic relationship
between artist and administration by releasing music by musicians who are
“self-producers” and not just looking for the enslavement of the “deal”.
Musicians who do not want to compromise their music to fit into a narrow
definition of "commercially viable”, but expand that definition.
Those that double their efforts to support their ideas and dreams define
what we are all about. Although there are many artists that need the administrative
strong hold of a major label to run their lives, there are many like the
artists of Edgetone that have what it takes to stand on their own.
It is the desire of Edgetone to make
available recordings and creative products that act to support diverse
creative music and art that is otherwise being pushed aside, misunderstood
or, socio-economically marginalized. Aside from modern jazz, the new sonic
series is the flagship and guiding light of Edgetone. Through solid grass-roots
promotion we strive to bring to the public the legacy of New sonic which
embodies a fifty-year ongoing journey which challenges the standard norm
of music form and structure. During October 25-27 the SIMM Series founded
by saxophonist/composer/producer, Rent Romus will feature the artists of
Edgetone as well as their colleagues from all points in the Bay Area.
ABOUT THE FOUNDER
Rent Romus is a force spanning over seventeen years of creative improvised music. The current director and producer of Edgetone Records, the SIMM Music Series at the Studio 6 Musicians Union Hall, and co-curator of the Luggage Store Gallery Series with Ernesto Diaz-Infante in San Francisco, Romus has introduced countless musicians from the world over and multimedia events to the San Francisco Bay Area culture and throughout parts of the world.
During the mid 80’s, Romus enhanced
his studies at the Stanford Jazz Workshop at Stanford University, where
he was blessed with the wisdom and guidance from Stan Getz, guitarist Bruce
Forman, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Martin, and drummer Eddie Moore. In 1984 at
the age of 16, Romus re-organized directed NAYJE (the North Area Youth
Jazz Ensemble), a seventeen piece big band featuring some of the best young
high school and college bay area musicians at the time. In the fall of
1986, while attending the University of California at Santa Cruz, he formed
the group Jazz On The Line which became the focus for his compositions
and productions. JOTL was an acoustic jazz sextet that fused jazz, blues,
gospel, and hip-hop into original compositions. Romus produced three albums
for this group including his critically acclaimed CD Jazz On the Line with
Chico Freeman, In The Moment on Edgetone Records soon to be reissued. Mid
span the group changed it’s name to 2AM, and was considered one of the
founding bands of the “acid jazz” scene popular in the early nineties parallel
to Charlie Hunter and the like.
In 1993 seeking a more expanded format
to explore, Romus formed the modern music group RKZtet, which featured
ex-ESP recording artist and drum master James Zitro and former Sun Ra Arkestra
cellist Kash Killion, both noted for their contribution to the development
of the “new jazz” of the sixties. Later in 1994 Romus renamed the group,
The Lords of Outland, and brought in soon to be film music composer Vytas
Nagisetty (Brock Lee) on bass, Andrew Borger (currently drummer for Tom
Waits) and Jason Olaine (Jay O), (currently AR director for Verve Records
Universal) on trumpet.
The Lords of Outland recorded their
first album You’ll Never Be The Same, Jazzheads Records JH9493 in 1995,
and were featured on the then fledgling BET Channel National Network Show,
“Jazz Central” as part of the Jazz Discovery program. That same year Romus
self-produced his first overseas national tour of Denmark which featured
many of Copenhagen’s young improvisers discovering such musicians as pianist/trumpet
player Jonas Müller who has recently moved the S.F. Bay Area, and
drummer Stefan Pasborg.
In 1996 Romus returned to Denmark
for his second tour with Jonas as the Rent Romus Sound Cirkus. The group
also included San Francisco basists George Cremanchi and saxophonist Alex
Weiss. After returning to the U.S. they continued on to the Bay Area to
finish the tour. During that year he also assisted bluesman Paris Slim
produce his first major American release with guitarist Joe Lewis Walker
and Sonny Rhodes. In 1997 Romus had the honor of recording with tenor sax
master John Tchicai. Tchicai is best known for his work with the NY Art
Quartet, NY Ear and Eye Control, and his recordings with John Coltrane
and Albert Ayler. The CD of this recording, Adapt…or DIE! was released
at the end of 1997. In 1998 Romus released Blood Motions featuring his
young Danish protégés Stefan Pasborg and bassist Jonas Westergaard.
In 2001 Romus re-opened his avant,
free music lable Edgetone Records, where his current release can be found,
interweaving science fiction, horror literature, improvisation, Finno-Ugric
music traditions, and the inspiration of Albert Ayler.

Almost everyday in the news there
are stories about how a group of scientists after so many decades of painstaking
research and work create a new drug or make new discoveries, but how many
times does one read about a group of musicians that have done the same
thing?
A trio of experimental and improvisational
musicians called the Tri-Cornered Tent Show has done just that. It has
taken them the last part of the last century (25 years to be exact) of
dedicated practice, research, and patience that brings them to announce
the release of “Maze Above the Abyss”, “Tri-Cornered Tent Show”, and “Beneath
the Mountains of Madness” all encased in 3 compact discs.
The musical journey began with initial
tracks being recorded using the ancient anti-deluvian technology of electronics
from the 70’s. Though methodical deciphering of the Lovcraft short story
“The music of Eric Zann”, other related stories expanded upon Lovecraft’s
Greater Cthulu Mythos they began recording free improvisation and orchestrated
sound sculpture over those 25 years to create the projects now available
on the new bay area label Edgetone Records.
Now, they come out from their exile
held up in a well-insulated dank little studio in the depths of Richmond
California. By the shear force of will and their dedication to the world
of improvisation, they have a unique set of music to merit them worthy
of attention. In a world of pop can music they could teach a class in patience
and creation.

Lauffenburger~bass, electronics
Elliot Kallen~piano, electronics,prepared
tape
The musicians who make up the KLiP
trio have worked together off and on in various configurations for more
than twelve years and have performed in a wide variety of venues, from
concert stages to college campuses and nightclubs throughout California.
Their backgrounds are as eclectic as their music, reflecting their involvement
in western classical music, avant-garde jazz, industrial, electronic music,
as well as funk, bebop, rock, and world music. Individually, they have
recorded and/or performed with Marshall Allen, John Butcher, Eugene Chadbourne,
Bill
Champlin, Gianni Gebbia, Mats Gustafsson, Peter Kowald, Milcho Leviev,
Eddie Moore, Jimmy Rowles, Wadada Leo Smith, Glenn Spearman, Saadet Turkos,
Phil Upchurch, and Bennie Wallace.
Garth Powell
Garth Powell has performed throughout
North America and Europe and is currently an active member and composer
for more groups than you can shake a stick at. Garth has performed
and/or recorded with a plethora of world-class talent, including Jaap Blonk,
Nels Cline, Marco Eneidi, Douglas Ewart, Gianni Gebbia, Vinny Golia, Mats
Gustafsson, Raphe Malik, Miya Masaoka, Pauline Oliveros, Wadada Leo Smith,
Bertram Turetzky, Eugene Chadbourne, Tom Nunn and The Jackson Krall Drum
Quartet, just to name a few. Mr. Powell has recorded for Hearts of Space,
9 Winds, Sire/Warner Bros., and Leo Records, among others.
SAINT OF KILLERS
Jesse Quattro ~ voice/Alywnn Quebido
~ guitar/Tyler Cox ~ drums
A post-metal wave of improvised darkness
Saint of Killers' primary objective is to leave listeners with the sensation
that life is not all it's made out to be, that beauty and happiness can
only be found once one can actually acknowledge the ultimate truth of the
ugliness and horrors that is human nature. Either the audience either gets
it, or is absolutely repulsed.
Tyler Cox (also of San Francisco
proto-progressive punk outfit The Mass) lays down the crushing and free
foundation of uncompromisingly voluminous percussion. Alwyn Quebido flanks
the attack with a focused laser of unfocused aural mayhem on the guitar.
Jesse Quattro rounds out the core with her stunning array of melodic/cacophony
vocal sheets of sound.
They have also performed with the
occasional guest(s): Miya Osaki, Rent Romus, David Slusser, Matt Waters
of The Mass, to name a few. Saint of Killers, who sites Fantomas, Nels
Cline, Meshuggah, John Coltrane, Frank Zappa, Diamanda Galas, and John
Zorn as major influences, are constantly searching for new ways of expressing
the sonic truth to themselves while never swaying from the sound that brought
them together in the first place, which is searing, abrasive, obnoxious,
and terrifying free metal destructo jazz.
JESSE QUATTRO
Jesse Quattro is a vocalist, composer
and writer. Moving here from South Carolina 3 years ago, she has found
her niche in the improv scene and most recently heavy metal. She is the
featured vocalist of the thrash improv group Saint of Killers, the grindcore
band Carniceria, and the "experimental" jazz improv group The Abstractions.
She is writing for her first solo album that will feature all original
works and a select handful of musicians. She collaborates with improvisers
Michael Manring, Al Quebido, Tyler Cox, Moe! Staino, Jai Young Kim, Rent
Romus, Colin Stetson, Ernesto Diaz-Infante, David Slusser; the list is
never-ending.... Jesse is largely self-taught, influenced by the compositional
styling of Frank Zappa, Mike Patton, The Melvins, film songs from Bollywood,
John Zorn, Sade, etc. Jesse uses guitar pedals
to create noise, waves of soft crashing
sounds, gender shifting, and so on. Jesse also doesn't do any of that and
just sings or screams. She is currently studying Music Theory with Mills
College Music Professor Steed Cowart.
TYLER COX
Coming from the vein of punk/DIY
music, Tyler Cox prefers not to write an elaborate bio, feeling that his
music speaks volumes in comparison to any life story or personal history
(which is, in fact, quite boring). He is the drummer for Bay Area rock
band The Mass, as well as the more experimental Saint of Killers. He also
releases sporadic Noise compositions under the moniker Skull, and operates
a nebulous production/inspiration think tank by the name of Skullworks
Mfg., which recently hosted a successful celebration of noise and "difficult"
music, the Oakland Noise Festival. Tyler offers that one listen closely
to his various music/sound endeavors in order to gain more personal insight
into his thoughts and feelings.
TWINE
Doug Carroll ~ electric cello/Tom
Nunn ~ inventions
International cellist and composer, Doug Carroll expands into new sound domains with the use of electronic processing and creative thought. Carroll's compositions for electronic cello and tape feature the spontaneity and drama of a live performance combined with the richness and diversity of the taped material. His solo improvisations have received international acclaim for their stark originality and musical sensitivity. Additionally, he has composed for a variety of multimedia events, including modern dance, theatre, film, and video, as well as collaborations with visual artists. He studied composition with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Lou Harrison, and Anthony Braxton. He has an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College and a BA in Music from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Other studies include the Darmstadt International Course for New Music and the Royal Conservatory at the Hauge, Netherlands.
Tom Nunn has designed, built and performed
with original musical instruments since 1975, having received a B.Mus.
and M.A. in music composition from the University of Texas at Austin and
S.U.N.Y. Stony Brook. His instruments typically utilize commonly available
materials, are sculptural in appearance, utilize contact microphones for
amplification, and are designed specifically for improvisation with elements
of ambiguity, unpredictability and nonlinearity. In addition to the more
than 50 instruments he has made, Tom has performed extensively throughout
the San Francisco Bay Area over the last 20 years, and in Canada and Europe,
both as soloist and with other musicians, including the groups ROTODOTI
and OFF RAMP, and has appeared on a number of recordings (see DISCOGRAPHY).
In 1998, Tom completed writing and self-published WISDOM OF THE IMPULSE:
ON THE NATURE OF FREE IMPROVISATION, a book that examines various aspects
of this illusive art and presents a theoretical foundation for creative
listening, analysis and discussion. Tom has also written a number of articles
about the use of experimental instruments and improvisation in publications
such as EXPERIMENTAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, MUSICWORKS and LEONARDO.
TONY PASSARELL 4-TET
Tony Passarell + his band
Musician, founder, producer, visionary,
Tony Passarell covers all the bases from punk to experimental. Since 1979
he has slammed the West Coast with such groups as the Bub Orchestra, Mad
Phat, Hunting Game, The Borman Six, Dutch Falconi, and Delta Head-Trip.
As well as performing as a leader he has been featured with John Tchicai,
John Ehlis, Scott Amendola, Gino Robair, Myles Boisen, and The Lords of
Outland.
He was producer of the Airwaves Jazz
Festival from 1994 through 1998, and coordinated and organized the Wednesday
night modern jazz series at the club On Broadway, the Fringe Arts Festival,
and various visual artists shows throughout galleries in Sacramento California.
In addition to performing and producing
events Tony has produced numerous recordings and promoted world artists
such as Charles Gayle, Bert Wilson, Myra Meford, Ben Goldberg, and Steve
Coleman.
SCOTT LOONEY – solo piano
Scott R. Looney has been making noises
on various instruments since he was about 3 years old, and comes from a
long list of Cal Arts alumni, joining fellow improvisers Adam Lane and
Aaron Bennett whom he regularly plays with. He first studied jazz and improvisation
in the unlikely cultural atmosphere of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at Coe College
under avant trumpeter Paul Smoker, also obtaining his BM in Music Composition.
In 1990 he attended the Banff Jazz Workshop in Banff Canada, where he learned
unique approaches to improvisation and composition from Steve Coleman,
Robin Eubanks and Kevin Eubanks. In 1991 Scott attended the California
Institute of the Arts, where he studied improvisation under Roscoe Mitchell
and Wadada Leo Smith, as well as composition and interactive electronics
under David Rosenboom and Morton Subotnick. After graduating with an MFA
in Music Composition, he moved to New York, where he honed his composition
and improvisation skills in sessions with Herb Robertson, Phil Haynes,
Jim Black, and Randy McKean. In the summer of 1996, he moved back to the
Left Coast, this time to Oakland, and since then he has been gradually
emerging from his shell, composing and playing varying instruments in performances
with Leo Smith, Dan Plonsey, Moe, and Rent Romus.
FORWARD ENERGY DUO
Jim Ryan ~ tenor, alto saxophones/Spirit
~ drums/perc
Poet, writer, philosopher and musician,
Jim Ryan is an original member of the exploratory family of artists of
the 20th century. His powerful playing style and truly original voice permeates
the San Francisco Bay Area with vibrant spirit.
Jim Ryan was born in St. Paul, Minnesota
and began listening to bebop at age 15. In 1958 after obtaining a degree
in philosophy from the University of Minnesota, Jim was drafted into the
army and sent to Europe. After serving for 21 months, Jim found himself
attending the Sorbonne in Paris France. After a short time he discovered
he was infected with the writing bug and became involved with the beat
poet community that was blossoming in France and throughout the world,
rubbing elbows with such poets as Boroughs, and Ginsberg. Nearing his mid-30's
it became more difficult to make a living writing and he found many of
his former-writing friends were becoming involved in painting and other
artistic endeavors. In 1968 Jim was given a wooden flute and shortly thereafter
acquired a c-melody sax. At the same time many of the American new music
musicians, Sonny Murray, Albert Ayler, Sun Ra, Archie Shepp, Anthony Braxton,
and the AACM were given funding by the US Government and settled in Europe
including France. Jim was in the right place at the right time and found
himself jamming and performing with these rebels of creative music. As
the migration of cutting edge American artists continued more straight
ahead artists like Johnny Griffith and Steve Lacy began to arrive to take
advantage of the European scene. In the early 70's Jim participated in
a yearlong workshop organized and led by Steve Lacy while continuing to
develop his writing. In 1975 Jim formed the Free Music Formation, a group
which performed in Paris and other European cities.
In 1975 he returned to the United
States in search of a fresh start and settled in Washington, D.C. where
he formed the Art Performance Group performing throughout the area. In
1987 he moved California and lived in Marin County until 1993 when he moved
to Oakland and became part of the San Francisco Bay Area improv and jazz
scene.
After a long hiatus, in 1997, he
launched one of his current groups Forward Energy featuring stellar artists
like trumpet
player Eddie Gale and drummer Donald
Robinson. Jim also performed with Marco Eneidi's "American Jungle Orchestra,"
and Eddie Gale's "Orchestra for World Peace." In 1998 he became the editor
and publisher of Outside, an underground art and music zine in Oakland,
which featured such artists as Positive Knowledge, Marco Emeidi, as well
as many artists of Bay Area improv scene. For two years beginning in 1999
Jim was the booker for the Luggage Store Gallery Series in San
Francisco. At that same time he was
also booking for the Starry Plow new music series in Berkeley, 2310 Telegraph
Gallery in Oakland, and he currently curates shows occasionally at 21Grand
Gallery in Oakland.
In the spring of 2000, he founded
the Electro/Acoustic Sextet of Oakland, which was a melding of free jazz
and avant academic styles. The group performed in Oakland and at the Big
Sur Experimental Music Festival in May 2000. In the spring of 2000 he performed
in the 401 Festival at Theater Artaud in composer Matthew Burtner's piece
for nine tenor saxophones, "Portals of Distortion." You can hear this pivotal
Bay Area saxophonist presently with Forward Energy and the Left Coast Improv
Group.
Spirit speaks through the drum. Here
he plays gongs, bells, rain stick, singing bowl, donno (West African talking
drum), sheet metal, rachet, cymbals, & rototom, as well as his modified
trap kit. “First of all, my thing is spiritual. Every human has a spirit
– without it you’re dead – so your spirit is what I’m dealing with. Each
note I play represents a certain message, so it depends on where I put
the beat, on how I hit the drum that makes you respond to a certain thing.
For me it’s a religious matter. Drumming goes with my religion. Drumming
is a language – this language belongs to my religion. So, every time you
see me walking, you see a religious person walking with a spirit. Everybody’s
got spirit. Wherever you are, you’re a spirit of your own. So you have
to find out about your spirit and make sure it gets on with other people’s
spirits. That’s what happens when I play music with people.”

Violinist Yehudit (pronounced "yeah who DEET") is making a place for herself in the forefront of the jazz mainstream, demonstrating that the electric violin, in Yehudit's hands, is a convincing and innovative jazz instrument. A classically trained player with a solid grounding in the jazz idiom, her extensive professional experience encompasses ensembles as diverse as the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra and the jazz/blues band John Handy with Class. Performing on a five-string, all-electric violin, she produces a varied sonic palette, ranging from boppish licks and wails to warm, singing melody. Her music is firmly rooted in straight-ahead jazz, and spiced with blues, free improvisation, and a dash of funk.
Danielle Degruttola was born in Boston, MA. She is a composer and cellist and has performed on both acoustic and electric cello throughout the Bay area, the United States and Europe. She moved to Oakland in 1994 to attend the Center of Contemporary Music at Mills College and received her MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media. She has also studied performance, electronic music, and composition at Smith College (BFA), Berklee College of Music, and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. She has performed with many outstanding artists including John Oswald, Cecil Taylor, Buckethead, Henry Kaiser, Vince Welnick, Greg Goodman, Lukas Ligeti, Prairie Prince, Paul Plimley, Miya Masaoka, and Pauline Oliveros.
Her video projects includes appearances on MTV music videos (Journey, Will & the Bushmen), and cable network appearances on the Sci-Fi Channel and USA Network ("Cool Tech" show) and "21st Century Home" show.
Danielle has worked quite extensively
with improvisational music, analog and digital recording, electronics and
computers; writing computer programs using MAX (an object-orientated computer
language) to develop interactive cello and electronic music pieces. Her
experience with composition, electronics and cello performance in a variety
of genres (improvisation, rock, jazz, fusion, classical, modern, hardcore,
Indian, etc.) allows for a flexible and textural addition to all different
types of live and recorded music projects.
C.J. Reaven Borosque is a deep new
contemporary San Francisco Bay Area writer, musician, and abstract visual
artist. From the time she was eight, her love for science fiction shows
through her art while starkly melding sociopolitical issues of our times.
Her uncompromising writings present stark truths about society at large,
and the ever-changing mindset of the world and its myriad of cultural ehtic,
enveloped in abstract futuristic fantasy and surreal mindscapes. Her influences
include Phil K. Dick, Frank Herbert, Madeline L'Engle, Sylvia Plath, Emily
Dickinson, and Allen Ginsberg. Edgetone is proud to release her first of
many books to come of this new genre of poetry entitled, “The Metal Quan
Yin”.
Currently, her most recent poem The
Metal Quan Yin can be found on Dark Planet.
In 2000, The Lords of Outland presented
a series of new music pieces based on man of her exploratory writings entitled
"The Desitinations Suite" in the first season of the SIMM Series in San
Fransico. In April of 2002, Edgetone will release an addition to her new
book a CD of music written to her works by Rent Romus’ Lords of Outland.
Bob Marsh performs regularly on violin,
cello, piano, vibraphone, flute, and uses extended vocal techniques.
He is the leader of the Emergency
String Quartet, the Robot Martians, the Illuminated Orchestra, Opera viva;
co-leader of Lucha de Leche with Ernesto Diaz-Infante and member of Aaron
Bennett's Nonet and Jim Ryan's Left Coast Improv Group.
Current musical projects include
: Gene Coleman's "Ensemble Noamnesia", Fred Lomberg-Holm's "Phenomenal
String Quartet", Marc Perlish's "Stray Quartet", duo with Blaise Siwula
in "(a+b) squared", founder/director "Quintessentials
Dave Mihaly
After studying drums with Andrew
Cyril in New Jersey, this tall mantis-like creative master has been heard
with countless groups and artists such as, Bando, Victoria Williams, and
Eartha Kitt. He is however known in the Bay Area for his work with the
Kalideophone Big Band, and After the End of the World Cortet.
Currently, Mihaly can be heard on
After the End of the World Cortet CD 13, and Rent Romus' Lords of Outland.
Bill Noertker has been an active member
of the Bay Area music and composing scene for the last fourteen years.
He studied jazz history and theory in the early '80's with Bobby Bradford,
Ornette Colman's first trumpet player. He began composing under the tutelage
of Albert Ryz-Ryzky in the band Bardo in the late 80's. In 1989, he and
other members of Bardo formed the After the End of the World Coretet (AEWC)
as a forum for their compositional and improvisational ideas. The AEWC
has released 3 recordings and continues to perform a unique style of jazz.
Currently, Noertker is the bassist for the Lords of Outland.
Noertker has collaborated with dancers,
composing music for ODC's "Pilot Project", and for "Liberty's Breast."
He is currently composing music and seeking funding for two projects, "Angels
and Acrobats," a jazz ballet inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke's Duino Elegies,
and "San Francisco Suite," tone portraits of San Francisco neighborhoods.
